Gigabyte AMD AM3 Phenom II/Socket AM3/AMD 790X/4DDR3-1866(OC)/ATI CrossFireX/GbE/7.1-CH ATX Motherboard GA-790XTA-UD4 Immediately

I chose this board as the foundation for my recent build based on some key factors:

-Brand loyalty
-Gigabyte's "Ultra Durable" design with large heat sinks on the North and South bridge chipsets
-plenty of room for expansion, USB 2.0 and 3.0, Fire wire, SATA and eSATA, Digital and analog audio, 2 PCI express 2.0 slots.
-It just flat out looks cool with the blue theme!

The AMD 790x chipset is very powerful, and this board will allow you to crossfire two video cards. If you're really hardcore, you can opt for a 790FX and crossfire more cards if you desire. I am currently running this board with Corsair PC3-12800 RAM, an AMD 965 BE processor and a single XFX HD 5770 video card. Even an AMD 955 BE would still be plenty of horsepower. Plus this board is built well and can handle the heat when you start to overclock.

I also liked that this did not have onboard graphics as 9 times out of 10 you will disable it and an aftermarket card will be installed. Plus the rear panel has literally every type of connection you will ever need. Even digital Coaxial and Optical audio outs.

There are other great boards available from other manufactures like MSI or ASUS and even Gigabyte, but unless you want to Crossfire more than 2 video cards I recommend you check the specs on this board and give it some thought before you make your decision.Get more detail about Gigabyte AMD AM3 Phenom II/Socket AM3/AMD 790X/4DDR3-1866(OC)/ATI CrossFireX/GbE/7.1-CH ATX Motherboard GA-790XTA-UD4.

Low Price ASUS M3N78-VM AM2+ Nvidia 8200 DDR2-1066 Nvidia Geforce 8200 IGP mATX Motherboard

I bought this Asus board to replace a MSI board that had gone bad. I installed it, hooked it up, turned it on, and it booted up the very first time. It had no problem with my old memory which is slower than 1066 (800 I think). I had to re-do my network settings which is par for the course with a new mobo.

Now for the fancy stuff. Despite the fact that this board has THREE video hookups (VGA, HDMI, DVI), only ONE of them will work at a time because of the limitation of the Nvidia 8200. So for dual monitors you need to add a graphics card. Luckily I had one ready.

Then I tried the digital audio. The manual said coaxial SPDIF but it was actually optical TOSLINK on the board. I could not get it to work, even with the latest development version of Ubuntu 10.04. From what I could find on the support forums, you need to use the built-in HDMI (and perhaps *only* that) for video in order for digital audio to work, and nobody outside the Windows universe has ever done it successfully.

Analog audio worked with no fuss when I tried it.Get more detail about ASUS M3N78-VM AM2+ Nvidia 8200 DDR2-1066 Nvidia Geforce 8200 IGP mATX Motherboard.

Save Seagate Barracuda ST3320620AS, 7200.10 - Hard drive - 320 GB - internal - 3.5" - SATA-300 - 7200 rpm - buffer: 16 MB

Like many others, my Seagate Barracuda also died. I first knew there was a problem when my hard drive was not detected in Windows. I powered off and on, and it was still detected in Windows. I restarted and found out that the drive was not even detected in the BIOS--yikes. I powered off my computer, unplugged the power cable, opened my case and re-seated the cables to the drive. Still not in BIOS. I also tried a different SATA port on the motherboard and a different cable with no success. When I used my computer the next day, the drive was detected again.

Since then, my hard drive will intermittently stop recognizing in Windows and in the BIOS. Sometimes it is gone when I power up, sometimes it dies while I am using it. It has been difficult to run diagnostic tools, such as chkdsk and Seagate's SeaTools, because half the time my drive is not recognized, or stops being recognized.

I do back up my important files, and after this happened, I started moving all my data off the drive. This was a very frustrating and slow process as often the drive was not recognized. Eventually I got most of my data off, but some of it was definitely corrupt because when I would move it the drive would immediately stop being recognized.

The worst news is that others are not receiving good customer support from Seagate. With Seagate's warranty terms, the drive has to be shipped back with specific packaging requirements, such as no peanuts. Yet, I received the (OEM) drive covered in bubble wrap and surrounded by peanuts... After paying for shipping, you have to wait for Seagate to send you a different refurbished hard drive. Unfortunately, they send the same model and customers have had their replacement drives die on them too. They then have to repeat the return process. I contacted Seagate to ask if I could receive a hard drive model without these known problems, and they said no. I also asked if they had improved their testing to ensure that bad drives were not sent to customers. They said that bad drives happen and they couldn't prevent that. I understand that, but couldn't they at least send a model that does not have these known problems?

I deal with hardware, warranties, and vendors all the time in my professional and personal life. Compared to other situations, I am not pleased with Seagate's customer service. I recommend buying from a company that values their customers. Anyone can make a hard drive, what really counts is a company that values its customers.Get more detail about Seagate Barracuda ST3320620AS, 7200.10 - Hard drive - 320 GB - internal - 3.5" - SATA-300 - 7200 rpm - buffer: 16 MB.

Discount Corsair TWIN2X4096-8500C5D Dominator 4GB 2 X 2GB PC2-8500 1066MHz 240-Pin DDR2 CL5 Dual Channel Desktop Memory

I have 2 sets (total of 4gb). My older set is version 1.1. The set is just bought is version 2.1. They worked for a few months and now 1 stick just died. I have read alot about the new ones failing quickly but I went ahead and ordered anyway. Now I need to go through the RMA process. They do have a very good RMA process though.

I still like corsair memory but I can't recommend the 2.1 version of these Dominators anymore. I think they changed the chips they use in V2.1. It's not worth the price and the headaches of the RMA Process. I just bought a set of G.Skill with the same specs for 40 percent cheaper. The G.Skill's are running fine.

My pc has two RAM slots and this was the most memory available, so I bought one with the intention of buying another for the other slot if it worked. This item shipped the same day I ordered it. I installed it in my pc and it did not work. Did some research on my make and model to discover that my pc could not handle any more than 256MB RAM in each of the two slots. Stuck it back in the now mangled packaging, put it in the box it came in, slapped the return label on and sent it back. I was credited in full (including shipping) within a week. Buying EVGA 01G-P3-1080-TR GeForce GTX285 for Mac 1024 MB DDR3 PCI-Express 2.0 Graphics Card

I bought the card primarily for gaming purposes and the card does this great. I am a little saddened that a card made for Mac products did not include a mini display port on the back, only two DVI outputs. I went down to my local Apple store to purchase an adapter and found out they sell this adapter for $150. I got online and purchased the Gefen adapter from Amazon for 75 dollars. If you are not using the newer cinema displays you are ok but if you have the new models just be warned that this card is going to cost you more money.

This is a big case but easy to put together. Almost any size power supply will fit in it. Plenty of room left after I install my 3 video cards. Each fan along with the intake for power supply has a filter. This is a great case that will keep your components cool but will take up a lot of space.

Where To Buy Thermaltake A2414 80mm Blue LED Dual PCI Slot Fan

This is one of the best PCI slot fans because of its large size and great construction. It also very quiet because its an 80mm fan so it doesn't have to spin as fast. I ordered this and an Antec Cyclone Blower, so it gave me a great chance to compare the two. This Thermaltake is much much better than the Antec in every way.

These fans are a great addition but you can't expect too much out of them because of the nature of their design. You also need to have enough intake vents in your case in order for them to work properly, so I took off the cover for the second CD-Drive, and now I can feel the air being sucked through there.

I would highly recommend this to everyone. Just make sure that you have enough room for it because it is quite large.Get more detail about Thermaltake A2414 80mm Blue LED Dual PCI Slot Fan.

CORSAIR XMS2 2GB ( 2 X 1GB ) PC2-6400 800MHz 240-pin DDR2 CL5 Dual Channel Desktop Memory Kit - TWIN2X2048-6400 Review

I ordered 8 GB's of this DDR2 RAM for a 64bit multimedia PC I was building solely for home entertainment. I have always been either a Corsair Fanboy or an OCZ Fanboy so when I saw this economy ram of Corsair brand for the price Amazon was running it for it made it a no brainer. Timings are tight on the system I installed into and of course Corsair always has no hassle if problems pop up. I have used alot of different RAM manufacturers over the years and I have received a bad stick of RAM from most. Dead sticks do happen unfortunately from time to time, however Corsair has always been fast, polite and accurate any time I've had to send back a dead stick in the past. They are one of the only companies I would ever think about buying an economy stick of ram from.Get more detail about CORSAIR XMS2 2GB ( 2 X 1GB ) PC2-6400 800MHz 240-pin DDR2 CL5 Dual Channel Desktop Memory Kit - TWIN2X2048-6400.

EVGA nVidia GeForce 8400GS 512 MB PCI-Express Video Card 512-P3-N725-LR This instant

The card works fine once it is installed. Difficulty was in getting the supplied driver to install, that is the reason for a 4 instead of a 5. A message that driver could not be found would come up every time driver installation was attempted. EVGA support response was quick, and they asked that I download the latest drivers from the website. I had already tried that and got the same error message. I then tried uninstalling and reinstalling the card, then the driver. When the Microsoft found new hardware panel came up I tried it, and the driver installed without any problems.
I have no idea why this happened, but the card and the new 23" Viewsonic display are working together flawlessly. EVGA support was very quick to respond also. Since everything is working fine I am not going to download any newer drivers from EVGA.Get more detail about EVGA nVidia GeForce 8400GS 512 MB PCI-Express Video Card 512-P3-N725-LR.

Syba SD-PEX-JM1A2E PCIe 1x PATA and 2x e-SATA Raid Controller Card with JMB Chipset Get it now!

I purchased this card and expected to copy files from my C: to usbb2 external drive faster, and easily. it did not work right away. After I spent couple days, I found a trick: need usb2 cable to provide power for esata port to run, meaning I need both cable esata and usb connected to my external hard disk to get better speed when copy files. It's weird.

When I plug only esata cable from the card to my ext-hard-drive, there is no light on the enclosure indicating the disk is active, and no new disk found under device manage. I cannot copy files.

When I plug both USB2 and eSATA cables, the disk can been seen and confirmed under pci-bus (hardware manager), meaning the external hard disk can operate via the esata port.

Using the teraCopy tool (free download), I can see the difference of copy the same file: 30MB/s using USB, and 40MB/s using eSATA cable (also with USB2 for power supply).

Using Window7, copy files from C: to usb2 hard drive, the speed is around 12MB/s. While copy the same file from C: to another local D:, the speed is about 52MB/s. I expected this high speed when use this card for copying files to external hard drive using esata connection.

I will purchase another card, but not this model. I realized I get what I paid :-)

Discount Zalman ZM-NB47J Fanless Northbridge Heatsink

This was given to me from a fellow tech who couldn't use it on their machine. I'd been considering purchasing some replacement for the chipset cooler on my old board so I figured this would be a perfect candidate for that.

Dumping the parts onto the floor makes installing the cooler look rather confusing. It has brackets that are attached with screws and nuts, then the usual push-pins to install it. However, after skimming over the instructions a bit, the installation is quite simple.

The only real downside to this cooler is it's size. Where it's placed on my Asus A8N board, I'm pretty much limited to my 7600GT (or cards that length). Anything longer in that top PCI-Express slot would bump the cooler.

As for efficiency, I've not done any extensive tests, but it seems to do just fine. I played some videos on Youtube and temps stayed around 30*C which is fine for the chipset. It might spike more with extended use, but I wouldn't worry too much about it.Get more detail about Zalman ZM-NB47J Fanless Northbridge Heatsink.

Where To Buy XFX nVidia GeForce 9500GT 1 GB DDR2 VGA/DVI/HDTV PCI-Express Video Card PVT95GZAFG

Love the hardware itself. Dislike the fact the price is somewhat misleading insomuch that some manufactures of low-profile cards include the always needed low-profile bracket. I mean, why would I bother ordering a low-profile card if I didn't have a low-profile case? I guess you could, but I'm not sure why you'd bother. The bracket is made by XFX and called the "Low Profile Accessory Kit". It just seems like a bit of a mooch on an otherwise terrific card. On the bright side, the card is not overly expensive so it's bearable. If the first one wasn't DOA and the box included a low-profile bracket I'd have given this a 5-star.

Pros:
XFX makes great products.
Drivers download and install easy as falling off a log.
Chipset is amazing considering it'll run on such low power.
Runs WOW and other mid-range games at highest resolution with all the bells and whistles.
Amazon refunds are fast and easy.

Cons:
First card I got was DOA, had to get replacement.
Dislike having to buy a low-profile bracket for a low-profile card.
(It should come in the box).Get more detail about XFX nVidia GeForce 9500GT 1 GB DDR2 VGA/DVI/HDTV PCI-Express Video Card PVT95GZAFG.

Sapphire Radeon HD 5450 - 1 GB DDR2 HDMI/DVI-I/VGA PCI-Express Graphics Card 100292L

I bought this card for a business computer. I am running two monitors, and was excited when I saw that the card had three ports (DVI, analog and HDMI). It runs any two monitors just fine, but in order to use the HDMI port as part of a three monitor set-up you need an active adapter or a monitor with an HDMI input. The only direct adapter solution I have found - active HDMI to DVI or VGA - is around $120 (the HDMI to DVI cable I tried was $8.00). There are a few AMD approved active MiniDisplayPort to HDMI adapters/dongles available for around $20, but they are female HDMI to male MiniDP, and what you need is male HDMI to female MiniDP, so you can then hook the HDMI to DVI cable up (don't know for sure if this will work but it should).

I am looking for the right adapter but I have a feeling it doesn't exist. Aside from that, the card works exactly like I want. The dual, extended monitor setup is simple and intuitive and the graphics quality is fine. There are enough setup alternatives to tune the displays as much as you would want.

I am using it with two 19" 4:3 ratio, 1280 x 1024 LCD monitors, and have tested it with a 20" widescreen in the loop as well as with an old Hitachi 22" 828 CRT and the card was fine with all combinations. The tech specs say it needs a 400w power supply, but I have it in a cheap Dell with a 300w power supply and there have been no problems. The best part is that is is passively cooled... dead quiet. No heat problems in my setup as a business machine with the most demanding requirement the occasional use of Photoshop.

I recommend the product and would buy it again.Get more detail about Sapphire Radeon HD 5450 - 1 GB DDR2 HDMI/DVI-I/VGA PCI-Express Graphics Card 100292L.

Antec BP500U ATX 12V 500W Power Supply Top Quality

I bought this Antec BP500U as a replacement for my old computer. The description from Amazon didn't list the number or type of connectors, so I went to the Antec website and looked it up. They said it had 2 SATA and 5 Molex connectors, I needed all 5 Molex so it was just what I was looking for. I purchased the PS and received it in record time. When I went to install it, I noticed it only had 4 Molex connectors but had 5 SATA connectors. I don't have any SATA devices, so that wasn't good. I ended up cutting off three of the SATA connectors and splicing on two Molex connectors from my old power supply. Everything works fine and the noise level is the same as my older unit. I do wish they would accurately list the number and type of connectors, both on Amazon and Antec , so people don't get surprised when they go to install it.Get more detail about Antec BP500U ATX 12V 500W Power Supply.
