When I lost the sound for an older desktop PC, I faced the choice of either adding a new sound card or replacing the motherboard. The latter did not appeal to me because of the work involved and the cost; and the former was not an option since I had no spare slots.
I am happy I found a good solution in the USB Soundwave by SIIG. The installation was a snap, and I was happy to quickly get my sound back. And it appears to my untrained ears that the sound from this device is an improvement - it definitely sounds better.
While the unit is stated to be able to provide "home-theater quality surround sound" I have not explored this feature since my speakers are not capable; but for what I need, this unit delivered what I had hoped for.
